Is an ADHD assessment worth it at 40? An honest Australian answer

You are allowed to ask whether an ADHD assessment is worth it

Plenty of people reach their forties and start to wonder about ADHD. Often something makes the question hard to ignore. Your child gets assessed and the questions sound familiar. Perimenopause arrives and the strategies stop working. A friend describes their own assessment and it sounds like your life. Or you see a video on social media.

None of that is unusual. In our own study of 1,091 Australian families, 63% of parents raising neurodivergent children identified as neurodivergent themselves, and 46% had been formally assessed. Another 17% recognised it in themselves without one. You can read the full findings if you want the detail.

So you go looking for an answer, and find very little. Most pages that come up are written by clinics that sell assessments. They are not likely to tell you when it is not worth it. Or they give you vague information that does not tell you whether you are ADHD or not.

This article uses two words a lot. An assessment is the process: the appointments, the questionnaires and the interviews. A diagnosis is the answer the assessment gives you at the end.

Every figure below is Australian and current as at September 2026.

What an ADHD diagnosis gives you

You get an explanation. This is the change people name first, and the research supports it. One study followed adults identified late as ADHD or Autistic, and found that understanding was the main thing a diagnosis gave them. They described it as an explanation rather than an excuse. People said they became kinder to themselves, and gave themselves more time and more breaks.

Many adults describe the same shift. You stop reading your history as a series of personal failures, and you start reading it as a mismatch between how you work and how things around you were set up.

Your relationships can change too, in both directions. The same study found that being able to explain yourself helped people set boundaries. It also helped them see who was truly supportive. For some people that created distance from others. Most still counted it as worth it.

You get access to medication. In Australia, ADHD medication needs a diagnosis from an authorised prescriber. An assessment is the only route to one. If medication turns out to help you, this is the door a diagnosis opens.

What an ADHD diagnosis does not give you

A diagnosis does not lead to support by itself. A Senate committee looked at this across Australia in 2023. It heard from 700 submissions and found that once a person receives a formal ADHD diagnosis, "it can be difficult to obtain appropriate healthcare and support". People were often not told what services existed. The committee noted something else too. Many of the new services set up to meet demand for assessments "do not offer other ongoing support services at all".

One person told the inquiry what that felt like:

"I walked out after my appointment, with a script for a medication I'd never heard of and an address for the pharmacy. Other than those two items, nothing else was told or given to me."

Australian research on autistic adults identified in adulthood found the same pattern. Counselling was the support most people actually received. Sensory needs and access to other services often went unmet. Two studies, one on ADHD and one on autism, found the same thing. The door does not open by itself. Some of that gap you can close without waiting for anyone.

You do not need a diagnosis to start understanding yourself. That is worth saying plainly. So much support sits behind a piece of paper that many people cannot afford, or cannot wait for. The NDIS is unlikely to open. The NDIS, the National Disability Insurance Scheme, keeps two lists of conditions. List A holds conditions that are likely to meet its disability rules on their own. List B holds conditions that usually need more evidence about how they affect daily life. ADHD is on neither list. That does not automatically make you ineligible. The Department of Health told the Senate committee that eligibility "is not based on the type of disability". It rests on what the NDIS calls permanent impairment. In plain terms, that means a lasting difficulty that substantially reduces how you manage everyday life.

The numbers show what that means in practice. In March 2023 there were 300,822 adults on the NDIS. Forty of them had ADHD as their primary disability.

Most adults who do get NDIS support with ADHD get it through something else. There were 1,269 adults on the scheme with ADHD. For 1,229 of them it was listed as a secondary condition. If you have a co-occurring condition, that is usually the pathway.

What an ADHD assessment costs, and how long it takes

These figures come from a 2024 study by the University of Wollongong. Researchers telephoned 736 clinicians across Australia, posing as patients. The prices below are for the assessment that leads to a diagnosis. They do not cover treatment afterwards.

For an adult, on the specialist pathway:

Costs ranged from $230 to $3,915. One psychiatrist wait was a full year.

Half the clinicians who advertise ADHD as a speciality could not take a booking. Of 736 called, 434 answered. Of those, 216 offered assessments.

Medicare will not rebate the assessment items after you turn 25. Four Medicare items exist for a neurodevelopmental assessment. They are items 135, 137, 139 and 289. All four require the patient to be under 25. Each can only be claimed once in a lifetime. At 40, none of them are available to you.

That is not the same as no rebate at all. A psychiatrist appointment may still give you a rebate. Psychology sessions under a mental health treatment plan may also give you one. But the Medicare items made for this exact assessment stop at 25. At 40, you are fifteen years past them.

Where you live changes how you can access an ADHD assessment

Australia is part way through letting trained GPs diagnose ADHD. A GP assessment is charged as a GP appointment. It should therefore cost far less than $1,387. No state has published prices.

Each state and territory is at a different stage. This is the position on 2 September 2026.

Two things to know before you count on this.

It is for straightforward cases. For example, WA states that complex presentations will still be referred to a psychiatrist or paediatrician. Many adults identified late also live with anxiety or depression. If that is you, a GP may still refer you on.

Not every trained GP sees adults. For example, WA publishes its list, and some of those GPs only see patients up to 25 or 30.

Check your own state health department before you make a decision on it.

It is okay to say not now to an ADHD assessment

Most people who get a late diagnosis are glad they did. Not everyone is.

The research found a flip side. The hardest part was usually other people's reactions to the label. The label itself was rarely the problem. Some people reported anger, some regret, and some self doubt.

The same study found that timing mattered. Clinicians interviewed for it said readiness was important. If someone is not ready, the assessment can bring a lot of upset. Being ready is a real variable, not an excuse.

So "not now" is a legitimate answer. It is not the same as never. You are allowed to decide that this year is not the year.

How to decide about an ADHD assessment

Ask yourself what you want the ADHD assessment to do.

If you want an explanation, you can begin without spending $1,387. Reading, community, and talking to other late identified adults all cost nothing. Many people find most of the benefit here. Is it too late to get an ADHD assessment at 40?

No. There is no age limit on an ADHD assessment or diagnosis in Australia. Assessments happen throughout adult life. Late identification is common, particularly among women and gender diverse people. We write about it often under AuDHD and late identification.

Can a GP diagnose ADHD in Australia?

In some states, yes. As at September 2026, trained GPs can assess and diagnose adults in three places. They are Western Australia, South Australia and Tasmania. New South Wales and Victoria are close. Queensland allows GPs to prescribe but not diagnose. Check your own state health department, because this is changing quickly.

Does an ADHD diagnosis get you NDIS funding?

Usually not. ADHD is not on either NDIS access list. Eligibility rests on what the NDIS calls permanent impairment. It also rests on how much that affects daily life. A diagnosis alone is not enough. In March 2023, only 40 of 300,822 adult participants had ADHD as their primary disability. How long is the wait for an adult ADHD assessment?

About 10 weeks on average to a first appointment. Psychologists averaged about 6 weeks and psychiatrists about 16 weeks. Some waits reached a year. That is the wait for a first appointment, not the time to a diagnosis.
